[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] Under 11's fantastic Cup Win over Grasshoppers

Having been at the cup final last year and losing against Park Farm in a very close match, the under 11's wanted to win so much this time. They turned up to the match with a spring in their step and a smile on their faces. The changing room chat was great for both managers and kids and the parade on to the pitch was just like being at Wembley. After losing the toss, Grasshoppers kicked off and put us under pressure for the first 10-15mins of the game. We had little possession except from the strong defence of Sam, Finn and Reidy. Connor commanded his area and made some strong saves. We had to change the attack from having Tom and Lorcan up front, to leaving Lorcan on his own. This meant putting Tom on the left, where his speed and skill became a problem for GY, and Eddie moving into the midfield where he marked their Captain out of the game. Taylor gave his all on the right with his great touch, before being subbed for Fergus whose speed yet again became a problem for GY. Captain Jack, as ever, gave his all today and with all his heading probably lost a few brain cells too. Having made the changes, the guys got to see a bit more of the ball and change the game. We had our first attack at goal by earning a throw level with GYs penalty area. Finn launched another of his famous long throws towards Jacks head, who flicked it towards goal but a GY player just got a touch to it which deflected the ball away from the keeper and into the net. 1-0. The guys kept the pressure on until the halftime whistle went.
After being told to defend hard from the start, the boys went back on wanting it more then ever. They had some close chances early on, Jack hit the post and Tom and Lorcan both struck just wide of the goal. GY then got a corner. The guys knew how good GY are at corners as they had scored against us twice this season with them, so they marked the players as best they could but unfortunately they headed it in making it 1-1. The guys regrouped and pushed on without being open at the back. The tackles started coming in harder & stronger with tempers starting to show. Another throw from Finn ended up on Lorcans head, again off a GY body and into the goal. 2-1. The game went on with more fight from both sides. GY won a free kick just outside our area moments before the full time whistle. The guys arranged themselves in front of the goal, and Jack listened to my now hoarse screaming, and stood 5 meters in front of the ball. The free kick was taken and yet again Jacks head got in the way and stopped them from scoring. With a few more frantic kicks of the ball, the whistle went and the guys went wild. SABFCs first ever cup win by any team. The crowd were awarded for their support by the guys sliding on their tummies towards them.
Well done guys for all your hard work through the season whether you have played in 1,2 or all the matches. You all deserve your medals and you are all team players. With a few tournaments coming up lets hope we can get a bit more silverware for our cabinet. Well done again and you gave me my best Birthday present. Thanks to the parents for all their support and hope we can do more for you next season. Cheers and see you at training on Tuesday

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] What a day. What a club.

Where the heck do I start. So people to thank and congratulate. There are so many that there is a bit of a danger that I will forget someone. If so, really sorry!
It is not that I am ungrateful or did not notice you, just that I am not as good at remembering as I used to be.

Today, the ADYFL finals day. Actually, yesterday.

With no pitches in existence at Sellindge, we needed to plan, measure, mark and prepare three top standard pitches to befit the showcase day for the league.
Many, many thanks to Paul Smith, Chris Cornbill, John Jameson, David Waller, Gavin, Mark and Chris "the chainsaw" Price. In excess of nine and a half hours of work transformed the field into three incredible playing surfaces. Thanks to you all. And Ted.

So to finals day. 8am. Everyone arrives and it's time to make us the envy of the district. With additional help to those from the day before, from Paul Dedman and Paul Hobbs the brand new goals were put in place and crowned the new 11 a side pitch. Over at the gazebo our trusted caterers were doing their thing with added programme sales. Sylvia and Jim Tanner, Jo Petto, Louiza and Lou Ashman were keeping people fed and spirits up. Then we had some of our fab under 14s and an extra apprentice. Sam and James Tanner, Tom Robinson, Toby Cardno, Jack Ashman, Rob Price, Jack and Jonnie "the energy" Hobbs got everyone safely parked and into the venue, helped with goals and were all round good eggs. With the added help from the SAB angels, Daisy, Lily and Annie, it was all good.
All this help meant that Justine was able to make sure that things ran smoothly at the organising side of things.

The positive feedback our club has had, during and following the event has been awesome. We have never had better pitches and drew some real envy for our visitors and high praise from the referees. The hospitality, friendship and help shown by all of our volunteers has been highly commended by all. Again, we showed Seelindge Sports Club that we are just the club that they should be working with.

And then the football. After multiple semi-finals, we had just the one finalist today. The under 11s. And what a game. Gavin and Mark have worked really hard to make everything right for the lads after they went so close last season. Each and every one of the squad did their utmost in a tough game against Lydd, with skills, passion and bodies thrown in the way of trouble the lads were amazing. And secured a fantastic 2-1 win. Well done to all of you.

And so. Wth all effort and help of those above and those that I have missed (sorry), the support of families and friends we proved yet again, that our club really is one of the very best. And, today, a few hundred more people went home knowing it. In due course, there is even more exciting news too. To all of you. Thank you.

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] Under 10's cup semi final

Dear All,
The Under 10's faced a tricky semi final cup match away at Pilgrims. We had beaten them earlier this season 5-1 away and drew 1-1 at home so it was going to be a tight game. We needed to start quickly and we did today which was nice to see. We started strongly playing up a slopy pitch. Some good work by Peter POVEY moved the ball out to the left wing and Adam COX sent a great cross over to Lewis GOWER who hit it only to see it come back off the post. This season we have been so, so unlucky infront of goal. If that went in then I am sure we would have romped away with the game but that guys is football. Pilgrims then had chances but another great cross from Adam COX saw Peter POVEY 6 yards out with the goalie beaten but he couldn't keep his header down and it flew over the bar.
Pilgrims then had a penalty and our goalie Joe 'The Cat' STRUTT who has been in America for the past three weeks made a fantastic save to keep it at 0-0 at half time.

Maxwell BOURNE who again had another solid game in defence and Peter POVEY were replaced at half time by Eddie McCORMACK and Alfie DERRICK. We were down hill now and the chances started to come. Some great delivery at corners by Adam COX saw Eddie go close and then we hit the post again and again. Then Johnnie HOBBS let fly with a shot going into the top right hand corner, any other day it would have hit te net but it hit the bar and post and came back into play. At this point I knew it might not be our day. Even Nigel the Pilgrims coach said he had someone watching over his team from above today and he was not wrong there!!!

Lewis GOWER had another great game as did Will STRAND, as we got close to full time Lewis had a great chance but couldn't side foot it home. Extra time it was and again we had chances but couldn't finish. So penalties it was. It is always hard for someone to lose this way but someone had to. Johnnie scored our first and then Joe saved their penalty. Joe then took one but had his shot saved. They then scored leaving Lewis having to score. He hit it well but the goalie made a good save. Pilgrims then scored their third penalty and we were out of the cup.

Hold your heads up high today boys, you were a credit to yourselves, to the club and to the Ashford and District League. I couldn't have asked for any more except for one of the chances to have gone in but that didn't happen. All the Pilgrims parents and players saw a great game of football of which you deserved to have won.

However hold your heads up high the whole squad because although we will not be playing in the cup final at Sellindge Sports Club on Saturday May 5th we will be presented with our league title the first for our club. I need you all there in your kit and please bring along friends and family to celebrate a fantastic season. We will also get to watch the final between Pilgrims and Mersham. I will let you know what time you need to be there closer to the time.

Well done, great effort and keep it up for the 5 tournaments we are involved in during the summer. Thanks to the supporters today you were great.

See you at training on Tuesday 6pm to 7.15pm
Very very unlucky but remember we are the Champions!!!!!!!!!!
Regards
Paul, Mark and Chris

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] semi final cup game for the u11s

The semi final cup game could be our most important game of the season as it looked like our only chance of winning silverware. The boys turned up to their afternoon kick off at Challock against Pilgrims with a relaxed feel, which could have gone either way, which worried me slightly. SABFC kicked off with a strike force of Tom and Lorcan. They were able to control the front line with some great challenges and with a solid midfield of Eddie, Jack and Taylor pushed the team forward early in the game. We won a corner, taken by Finn, who crossed the ball into the area. Tom flicked it back out to Finn who sliced the ball across the danger zone and into the net 0-1. A long throw came moments later which Jack just tipped over the bar. Pilgrims put on the pressure earning themselves a corner. They played the ball into the area but the strong hands of Connor held onto the ball fantastically. Pilgrims were also awarded a freekick in a dangerous position, but they didnt convert. Seconds afterwards Fergus, who came on for Eddie, was brought down just inside their half. Finn launched the ball in, Jack passed it out to Tom who sent a cheeky little chip over the keeper finishing the first half 0-2. The team talk was to try to play more simple football as they seemed to be working to hard and the game wasnt flowing like it had over the last couple of matches. The second half started with some position changes. Cieran played on the left for Taylor, Reidy played a defensive midfield roll while Jack slid into center back. Pilgrims had alot more chances in the second half and also had a solid penalty decision not given. Sam made some solid challenges but got himself injuried so Eddie filled in at right back again. Pilgrims kept attacking giving us lots to deal with. Finn took the ball off their striker, ran the left wing to the halfway line then sent a long ball up to Lorcan. He turned his marker, struck the ball well and into the net 0-3. Exactly the same ball got to Lorcan moments later and he managed to finish the game with another goal making the final score 0-4. This means that for the second year on the trot, SABFC under 11s are in the cup final, which is to be held at Sellindge on the 5th May. I neednt of worried, the guys played some great football and got the result we all wanted. Thanks for all the support again this week, all you have to do now is bring as many friends and family to the final, where we promise to do our best on the day, and lets hope we come home with something shiny we can put in the trophy cabinet !!!!

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s final league game of the season

If we could win the last match of the season then we would have a great chance of finishing second, if Park farm loose 2 out of thier last 3 games. Lots of its and buts, but all we can do is win the match in hand. Being it was Mark's Birthday today, the boys said they would give it their all. The game started with the same formation as Saturday with Lorcan and Eddie up front, Taylor, Jack and Tom midfield, Reidy, Finn and Sam in defence and Connor in goal. We pressured Cranbrook from the off with a couple of close chances. Nothing came from them until Eddie passed the ball to Tom on the left, he took the ball past the last defender and took a shot making it 1-0. With more pressure from the boys , we won a throw in line with their area. Finn took the throw and this time it connected with Lorcans head, who flicked it into the back of the net. 2-0. There were more attacks from both sides until the half time whistle went. The team talk was to be aware in the second half that Cranbrook would change their tactics to get themselves back into the match, but I also wanted the boys to press on and get more goals. This was what happened. Cranbrook made a great run down the left into our area and was brought down, earning them a penalty. Connor stood tall and saved the shot but Cranbrook managed to connect with the rebound and place it in the net. 2-1. This made the boys more determind and straight away attacked their goal. Lorcan made a run through the middle of the field, did a one two with Tom, then took a long range shot which hit their keeper and ended up in the net.3-1. Cranbrook kept attacking more with the ball running straight across the area and even a 1on1 with Connor but nothing came of it. Moments later we won a corner which Lorcan took, he crossed the ball into the box where Jack was unmark, he headed the ball into the net, which gave him a well deserved goal finishing the game 4-1. Cieran and Fergus also played a great role in the team making it a wonderful result and another very important 3 points. Well done to all you guys and lets have our fingers crossed over the next couple of weeks for everybody elses results. Now on to the semi final of the cup and lets hope we can get another great results. Well done guys and thanks to all the spectators for their support through the season. Come on SABFC !!!!

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] Under 14s finish league in epic style

Hello SABfans

Saturday saw a milestone for our ever-improving under 14s. The match was a trip away to high flying Smarden. In a season that has seen us play very well against the top two clubs, it was always felt that we could give the league runners-up a good game.

SAB had the influential Jack A and regular keeper Harry missing. Other than that, both squads were at pretty much full strength. With the lads having been talked and coached through what was needed leading up to the game, it was down to them to put it into practice.
With Josh in goal and Tommy T filling in at left back and James C out on the right, we were ready.

The game started with some healthy early exchanges, most importantly with SAB squeezing Smarden and stopping their passing game. The scoring was opened after 15 minutes when Owen latched on to a powerful Connor throw-in. The keeper was unable to keep it out and the away support went nuts! The lads continued to suppress Smarden and camped in their half. This resulted in a number of corners, with Tom R a threat in the box. One these threats resulted in the ball dropping to Owen 12 yards out, who lashed home a sublime volley.

The lads kept the hard work going and took the 2-0 lead to half time. The second half was always going to be tough, keeping the work rate as high. The lads tried really hard with the outstanding Ben, Jack H, Lewis and Tommy working really well together as a back four. In front of them, Connor, in one of his best games of the season, with Tom and Sam as industrious as ever did their utmost to break up play and move us forwards. A special mention goes to the rotating four wingers, Rob and James and then Lewis and Toby who worked as hard defensively as they did offensively throughout. With Owen and Matt rotating as forwards, the whole squad were fantastic.

The game was secured by some outstanding saves from Josh who was brave and athletic throughout and then a Ben Arfa charge up the pitch and left footed finish by Captain Sam on the final whistle.
There are some games that you win, against the run of play and with huge amounts of luck. This wasn't one. The team totally deserved the result and showed, like their ever optimistic coaches have always said, that on their day, they are a match for anyone. This was endorsed by the very gracious Smarden coach and Chairman after the game.

Next week sees a rematch for the cup semi. Time for the lads to achieve something that is all too rare. Follow an epic performance, with another.

With the league season now over, our table tells an encouraging tale. We have moved significantly away from the teams beneath us. In fact with two or three results that we know should have been wins, we could have been in the top five. These are the games we will ensure we win next season as we move onwards and upwards. We finish our first season at 11 a side with over a point per game and a positive goal difference. More than that, we finish with a group of lads who have gelled so well and have the basis for real success in the future.

Thanks lads. We are very proud

Rich and Mark

Final Score SMARDEN 0 - SABFC 3 (Owen 2, Sam)

Away support. Plenty. Loud and proud.

Man Of The Match. All of them.

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s epic match away to Park Farm

With this being our first match for a few weeks it could go either way, the boys turned up positive and excited to have a match. The pitch had a heavy slope to one end so winning the toss was important, but we lost, so played down hill for the first half. Park Farm started strongly like we expected but so did we. We had a strong attacking force with Lorcan and Eddie, to try and muscle our way to getting a shot on goal. The defence of Reidy, Finn and Sam knew they would have a hard job on their hands but dealt with all that was thrown at them. The starting midfield of Taylor, Jack and Tom were the backbone of the squad, having to cover loads of ground to attack and help defend against a great side. PF had a shot at goal, but the went wide. Connor, who played fantastically again, commanded his area with great control, telling his defence what to do. Halfway through the first half, the boys interlinked well, showing the opposition how we play football. The ball found itself at Lorcan's foot and seconds later it was in the net making the whole SABFC team and supporters jump and scream. 0-1. Moments later Finn threw the ball into the danger zone where Tom crossed it across the goal, Eddie struck the ball well but Just wide of the net. Fergus came on giving us more speed down the right but found himself defending more then attacking till the half time whistle went. The team talk was to let them know that the second half would be 30mins of hard ,solid work as PF would use the down hill as their advantage. PF kicked off and attacked straight away. We kept them at bay with solid challenges. Cieran , who came on at half time, was quick and strong until a knee injury later in the match. Sam also became injuried bring Eddie to right back. PF had a penalty decision disallowed by the ref and we were granted a freekick on PFs area moments later against Lorcan. Finn took the freekick and curled the ball into the top left, but was saved in the last second. PF had many more shots at goal but nothing came of it. We thought the match was going to finish 0-1 until Jack headed the ball out to Taylor, who knocked it to Tom, Tom placed the ball over to Lorcan who unselfishly slid the ball to Fergus and with just the keeper to beat, hit the ball firmly into the goal. 0-2. The place went mad and the full time whistle sounded. It was our first ever win over PF and it felt great. The boys earnt the win and made two old men very happy [ as you would have seen if you were there, wimp]. Thanks to all the spectators and I hope you enjoyed your morning as much as we did and lets hope we can win our last game of the season Tuesday night as it could be very rewarding if we could.[still smiling as I write this]

Smeeth And Brabourne Football Club Newsletter No.3

Training

To all members, parents and carers.
We will be returning to Sellindge Sports and Social Club for training after the Easter holidays. Hooray! At least we can all enjoy a better view and possible refreshment while we watch all the hard work!
Please, if dry, can you use the back field for parking rather than Swan Lane.
Training is from Tuesday 17 April from 6pm -7.15 pm at Sellindge Social Club.

Dates for the Diary

Our Summer Shindig this year will be on Saturday 30th June at the Sellindge Social Club. The format will be changed slightly, so that we fit everything in. Times to follow.
It’s also our fifth year anniversary. If volunteers amongst you come forward, who knows what can be achieved to celebrate. If you are interested in helping at this event please come forward and speak to your coach. They can pass your number or any ideas forward.

Sponsored Swim

The Social Club are raising funds to replace the goal posts which is a must, as more of our teams will be using the bigger pitch as they progress. They are holding a sponsored swim event at Folkestone Sports Centre on Sunday 29th April. We would like someone from each team to swim in a relay. We hope to swim 2012 metres. If you are interested please talk to Gavin. For those not taking the plunge, please support the swimmers through sponsorship and support on the day. If you would like to swim please come forward as not all teams may have a representative.

Tournaments

Please ask your coach for the tournament dates for the summer.

Cup Final

Once more we are hosting the Ashford and District Cup Final at Sellindge Social Club. This is Saturday 5th May.

Smeeth and Brabourne Village Fete

This is Saturday 16th June we are providing hot food at this event to raise money for both the football club and for improvements to the playing field pitches. So if you fancy helping feed the masses please come forward as it is in the middle of tournament season and my fabulous gang of helpers maybe elsewhere!

Our Fabulous Under 10s

If you have not heard or seen the papers our very own under 10’s team have come top in the league!
How great is that to be our first ever team to achieve such success.
Well done to Paul and Mark and the team for all the hard work that has paid off. I was lucky enough to be there to watch the delight on the parent’s faces, and Pauls on pitch celebrations with the boys as the goals kept hitting the back of the net! The noise could be heard outside the village shop! On behalf of the club I can say we are very proud of all of you, and you thoroughly deserve the title of league winners!

Sport Relief and Teenage Cancer Trust

The total raised was £605 for The Teenage Cancer Trust, which Barclays have kindly offered to double. This is great news and we sincerely thank everyone who played a part. The Sport Relief total is yet to come in, but with around 400 participants, we are sure the news will be good. A special thank you to all who helped make the day such a success, and especially those milers in fancy dress!
A final thank you to Daisy and her business venture. She was very lucky to have been given so many cakes on the day and thank you to all those that baked or bought, a fabulous £150 was in her bucket towards the fund raising.
Keeping Up To Date.
We are trying to encourage all members to regularly check and use the club website forum in order to keep up to date with all that s happening in sabfc land. Simply go to www.sabfc.net and click the Forum link.

Thanks for your continued support. Sylvia

The under 14s close their home fixture list for the season, with a match against High Halden. With a cup semi final looming and the chance to finish one place higher than we are at the moment, there is a lot to play for. Following the best performance of the season against Beckley, confidence should be high.

Don't stay up watching sport relief all night lads. Be at Sellindge for 1000 hours. 1030 start. All spectators welcome.

PS Ted has been in action and the pitch is looking great. As great as it can, anyway!

Dear All,
It gives me immense pleasure to inform you all that Smeeth and Brabourne Under 10's have won the Ashford and District League Title.

This is a first for the club and I am proud that my team have achieved this after a great season. We went into the match knowing that we had to beat Wye FC by 7 clear goals. To score 7 goals in any match is not easy but with the pressure on us knowing that any other result would hand the title to Mersham.
I had a difficult decision to pick the starting line up but went for the same team that started at Mersham last week. Joe, Will, Eddie, Johnnie, Alfie, Lewis and Adam. The game started at a good pace and we pinned Wye into their half and the chances started to come and to go. It has been our problem all season that we cannot finish side off when the goal chances come along. This is something we must work on and it will make my life easier and I won't have to worry so much!!!
Chances came and went and I thought it would be one of those games. Then I changed things around bringing on Peter for Alfie and Maxwell for Eddie. It was probably the hardest thing I have had to do but it worked out for me this time and we began to get a rhythm going. Then came our first goal, Adam crossed the ball from the left, it hit the frame of the goal and landed at Peters feet and it was in the net. Now I could believe, but still along way to go. We kept the pressure on and it was not long before Lewis scored our second. I am sorry that I will not be able to describe each goal as it was so exciting. Half time whistle went and we had 20 mins left to get 5 goals.

I told the lads to believe and we went into the second half with it all to do. Chances came and went and after 5 mins we still hadn't scored another goal and I was starting to think that Mersham were going to pip us.
Then someone up in the sky started to give us some help. Lewis scored, then Peter. Then a penalty as Lewis was chopped down and it was Captain Johnnie who took and placed the ball. It was a pressure kick and he smashed the ball into the bottom right hand corner. Two more goals needed. The crowd were screaming for two more and the boys were up for it now. Lewis got his hatrick and I had to run onto the pitch as this took us level with Mersham on goal difference. 6-0 one more required. Time was against us now and a series of corners saw us come close. Then Lewis found himself running through onto a ball over the top and he flicked it over the keeper and we had done it 7-0 what a relief it was for me.
The crowd went wild and at the final whistle it was nothing more than you deserve for your efforts this season.

Some bottles of bubbly were then handed to the players and some great celebrations then began. What an effort, well done to you all as you have all taken part over the season. We will get the league trophy presented on 5th May at Sellindge so bring all supporters please.

Thanks to parents, Mark and Chris and to Jeff for being our ref for the season.
Get a copy of the Ashford KM this Thursday and there should be a great picture of you all.

Time for a few beers to celebrate thanks to you all you have made my season, see you at training on Tuesday
Best wishes

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s back on winning ways against Courtside

The under 11s were away at Courtside, having had a messy game at ours a few weeks before, we went there to make sure we controlled as much of the game as we could. We kicked off and attacked solidly from the start. 4 minutes in and Fergus made a great run down the right, stepping past the defence with ease, he crossed the ball into the area where Lorcan placed the ball into the back of the net. We kept the pressure up with a throw to Jack hitting the post and Tom moments later doing the same with his LEFT foot. Courtside made some advances but the solid defence of Sam, Finn and Reidy yet again kept them at bay, with enough conviction so that Reidy was able to make a great run through the middle. Courtside gifted us a corner, taken by Finn, connected with Jack's head and flicked off a Courtside player into the net. With another corner, this time by Lorcan, flew over the field to Eddie who connected with it well but placed it wide leaving it 2-0 when the halftime whistle went. The team talk was to change Eddie to the right to deal with their quick left winger and to bring Taylor back on to keep him involved with the team. This change worked well as we won a corner on the right, crossed long to Taylor on the left who, yet again, controlled the ball fantastically, stood up well, and hit the ball in the net making it 3-0. Courtside never gave up and could have had some chances themselves, Eddie did again what was asked of him and slowed the attacks down on their left. They had some stong attacks but Connor commanded his area and made some awesome saves again for his team. He was also involved in the next goal by kicking the ball out to Tom who made a strong run towards the net, he struck the ball and the keeper saved it but Lorcan was there to take on the loose ball and scored. He was then subbed for Harry to try and get his name on the score sheet for this season. After another attack their goalkeeper took a goalkick, Tom intercepted the ball, due to him putting in alot more effort, he passed it through to Fergus who made our tally up to 5. Courtside then scored from a ball that had clearly gone out of play, but we have to play to the whistle which is what we shall take away as something to learn for future matches. The boys had another strong performance ,and with only two more league games, have to try to win them both if we are to get something from a great season. Thanks to all the support again this week and please keep up the want until the end. Another three points!! Well done

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] Under 10's must wait till final game

Dear All,
The Under 10's went to Mersham for an early 9am kick off. Mersham were 3 points ahead going into this game but we had a game in hand so a win was what we were after. I know a few of the players were feeling the pressure of a big game but all played very well during the match. We kicked off and took the game to Mersham. We started very well and were in the Mersham half for some time however it was end to end stuff on a small pitch. Some good play by Adam COX saw him cross the ball into the box and Lewis GOWER was in the right place to hit the back of the net. A great start and I was hoping this would continue. Then came the turning point of the game, Johnnie HOBBS was inside the box and just about to shoot when he was tackled from behind and both his legs were taken from him. It was a clear penalty and even some of the Mersham parents were trying to look the other way when the ref didn't point to the spot. So we were declined a clear penalty which could have given us a 2-0 lead but it wasn't to be unfortunately. The game went end to end with chances both sides couldn't take. Then some good work by Alfie DERRICK and Lewis GOWER gave Adam COX a chance at the far post but he was off balance and fell to the floor with the ball inches from the line, Lewis tried to put it in but hit Adam and the best chance to take a 2 goal lead was gone. A throw by Mersham which shouldn't have caused us any problems did and a shot went in off a Smeeth and Brabourne foot and it was all level at half time 1-1.

In the second half Peter POVEY and Maxwell BOURNE came on and both did very well. We tried to get the winner but were also aware that we didn't want Mersham to snatch a winner. A good performance from Eddie McCORMACK and Will STRAND made sure of that and then Maxwell BOURNE took Eddie's place and again did a fine job.
The final whistle went and it was all square at 1-1. was it a fair result probably yes but if the penalty had gone our way then I think the game wuld have been a lot different.

We now have one game left home against Wye next Saturday 17th March 2012 10am kick off. We need to win by 6 clear goals to take the league title. It is a big ask but I know we can do it. I want the whole team there please next Saturday. Well done to all who played today we still have a chance to become champions and we know what we have to do next week.

Thanks supporters for turning up early on a Saturday and I hope to see you all with cameras next week.

I hope when I write next weeks report I can let the whole Smeeth and Brabourne family know that we are Champions!!!!!!!

See you at training please
Regards

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s home match with Grasshoppers yellow

It was another wonderful bright day at Sellindge where we hosted a match against Grasshoppers Yellow [top of the league]. We needed to win the game so we started the match with a strange 2-2-1-3 set up. Lorcan played as the front man to hold up the ball while the rest of the team caught up to attack. The defence was Sam on the right and Reidy on the left with Finn and Eddie as the 2 in the middle. Jack played the midfield role with Tom in a new position on the right and Fergus on the left. We kicked off and tried to control the game. GY attacked us within a few moments but Connor saved the ball with very strong hands[as he did throughout the match]. GY made another strong attack where they pushed the ball wide of the goal. We then rearranged the guys at the back which strengthened the defence and meant we could push forward as we needed to do. Lorcan had a couple of attempts which came to nothing. We were awarded a world famous throw, level with GYs area, which landed on Jacks head, scooped up in the air over the keepers head and into the net. The half time whistle went moments later and the plan was working 1-0 to SABFC. The idea was to keep up the hard work through the second half but we lost Taylor to an asthma attack and had Cieran, who showed great strength again, playing with a gum shield who also struggled. GY came out after a strong team talk with more want in their game and we seemed to have lost belief. Minutes into the restart GY scored making it all level again. I told the guys to keep attacking to win the game which left us short at the back. Even though the defenders all had great games and Connor who had his best game of the season, earning him MMMM, GY wanted it more and managed to score 3 more goals before the whistle stopped the game. This was the guys worst defeat of the season but they still came off the pitch with their heads held high. They have got to get belief and the want to win back into their game as we could meet GY in the final of the cup. Thanx to Paul for reffing today and to all the spectators for supporting the team. See you all at training and ready for our next match on Saturday.

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s league clash with Park Farm

The weather was wet and windy on this Sunday morning but the top of the league clash with Park Farm Rangers [PFR] was going to be a tough but exciting match. We started the match kicking off towards the wind and rain hoping to gain the advantage in the second half. We managed to make a couple of attacks towards their goal but the PFR keeper looked clean still by half time. PFR had most of the attack. They scored a goal from a left hand side corner and another from a freekick just inside our half which we couldnt clear from the line. The half time whistle couldnt come quick enough so we could reform and instruct the guys in how we could get back into the game. Now, with the wind advantage, we started the second half with more conviction and more want in our attack. Moments after kick off we pushed forward with MMMM Captain Jack putting in every effort to score and played as a captain should. Lorcan played some great passes and had some solid attempts. Tom ran with the ball at his feet and tried some close range shots. Fergus made some fantastic runs down the right crossing the ball into the area trying everything to get the ball in the net. Cieran made some solid tackles, interlinking play and runs on only his second match for SABFC. Taylor put in great effort in the first half but got injured early on. Eddie, who played as a defender today, had a very solid performance showing yet again how versatile a player he is for his team. Finn played well as the central defender and also gave PFR alot of trouble defending his long throw. Sam had, yet again, another fantastic performance keeping the PFR striker out of the game in the second half. James came on as sub and made some great tackles in the middle of the park and Connor performed as awesomely as normal with his goal kicks getting better and better. With all this great play and about a dozen attempts at goal we just couldnt put the ball into the net.We did manager to get PFRs keeper very dirty though. It was an awesome game admired by a large crowd of about 60 people who watched a game played fairly and at high speed. Both teams and parents should be proud of the entertainment the were involved in. Many thanks to you all for turning out and for Mike for reffing. Thanks again and see you all Tuesday night for training ready for our next match against Grasshoppers Yellow on Saturday

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] It's a funny old game ! Under 10's reach the cup semi-final.

Under 10's reach cup semi final after hard game against Wye

Well what can I say after the game today, we did everything except score. We had beaten Wye earlier in the league match 10-2 but all the teams have got better and this would be no push over. With it being a cup match the players who do not normally get to start were given their chance to impress and so they did. Maxwell and Owen were strong in defence and kept the best efforts of the Wye players to long range shots. Poppy and Cameron worked hard in midfield and battled very well and had some good link up play with Jack and Max who also did very well playing up front. We spoke at the start of the game that if things were tight then changes would be made at half time and it wasn't through lack of trying that the first half ended 0-0. Max had a good shot towards the end of the half that just flew wide.

Second half saw changes at the back with Eddie coming on for Owen. Johnnie and Alfie replaced Pops and Cameron and Peter and Lewis took the strikers positions. We started the second half brightly some great passing and movement and we went close to opening the scoring from Alfie if the Wye defender hadn't stuck his face in front of the ball as it headed towards the goal (ouch I bet that hurt!!!!) We then stopped passing and started to think we could beat the other team by just running at them. You can't do that and we struggled to find our form. Lewis had the best chance when he shot against the keeper but it came back to him and a shame for him but he just passed the ball the wrong side of an empty net. Head up Lewis the goals will come again. Further shots from Johnnie couldn't find the net and we went into extra time 0-0.

After a further 10 mins of extra time it was still 0-0 so the dreadead penatly shoot out was looming!!!!!

Johnnie and Joe scored theirs but poor Alfie pushed his thew rong side of the post. We were one kick away from going out but Joe made a save and we were back in it. The parents on the bank were giving great support and Peter was next to score. Wye then scored theirs so it fell to Lewis to take us back into the lead. He struck a great shot into the net meaning Wye had to score.

Joe had the Captains arm band today and what a great display he put on with a fine penalty save and we were through to the semi final. I was relieved to say the least. Well done great effort we just need to take our chances.

My thanks go to Jeff COOK for a great game as ref and to Chris GOWER who assisted on the touch line. Thanks to parents for your support and help with the goals.

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s quarter final match against Wye

With a home match booked in against Wye in the quarter final of the cup, we were ready for a much closer game then our first meeting of the season [22-0] as Wye had come on much stronger through the league. The game stated and we were able to keep possesion. We had plenty of attempts at goal, a cross from the left to Lorcan who headed over the bar. Another was an open goal were Lorcan over hit the ball wide of the goal. Wye pressed on where they could but didnt really have any attempt on our goal. We were awarded a throw 10 metres from the by line, Finn launched the ball into the area where Jack headed the ball, clipping a Wye player and into the net. We had more chances by Tom, Fergus, Eddie and Taylor in the first half but the Wye keeper, who kept them in the match, saved them all. Half time 1-0.
We had substitutions of Morgan & Louie in the second half & both did well. The game was more open in the second half which stretched both teams. Sam, Finn & Reidy had more to do but did their best to stop any players getting through to Connor, who yet again was able to keep a clean sheet. We had more attempts at goal, some by Tom who were well defended, which didnt get us any more goals. It was a tough game which we managed to survive getting us through to the semi finals against Pilgrims.
Well done guys for all your hard work. It was the first of many tough games between now and the end of the season. Lets just get down to some hard training and hope we can get more winning results to get us to the final. Thanks for all the support this week and for the next few weeks to.

Hi All

Had this email today from James Cracknell, Olympic gold medalist and all round sports legend.

If you are not signed up for our mile yet, I think he might be referring to you. If you have signed up, then grab a friend or ten and get them to sign up. If you have seen the TV ads, you may need a friend to make the back end of your costume work!!

Hello Mile organisers! I’m just writing to say a massive THANK YOU for all the amazing work you’re doing by organising your own Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles. I’ve been involved with Sport Relief for years now and know the massive difference you’ll make to Sport Relief by giving local people a way to get involved on their own doorstep.

You’re doing a fantastic thing so, please, please, spread the word in your communities and let as many people as possible know that they’ve got their own local Mile to join in with. Be proud of the fact you’re doing the very thing that Sport Relief is all about - going the extra mile - whilst raising money for an amazing charity.

Once again, good work, and good luck.

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] under 11s clash with Courtside

With an afternoon match at Sellindge to attend with, we knew we to step up to the mark to gain a result against a very strong Courtside. We started with a two man strike force of Jack and Lorcan to try and get those early goals we required.
Courtside kicked off and advanced strongly themselves. We dealt with them well and kept them out of our area most of the first half. With a great run down the right, Taylor earnt us a throw in line with their area, Finn sent the ball direct on to Jacks head who directed the ball into the back of the net. Courtside didnt lay down, they attacked down their right but had the ball taken off them. It was sent straight back up the field to Tom who had a one on one with the keeper, he struck the ball well sending it into the bottom right hand corner of the net.Louie made some strong defensive work in midfield all match and so did Reidy and Sam in the back three. We were awarded another throw in the same place as before, Courtside were unable to clear this aswell when Lorcan hammered the ball home to make it 3-0 at half time.
The second half was to be a strange half. No more goals were scored by either team but there were a couple of great freekicks taken. Lorcan had a chance from the left and Finn had a chance from the right. Harry could have had a shot on target infront of goal but was unable to connect. Fergus also had a chance but he was much stronger today when marking his man. There were also plenty of hard challenges resulting in many substitutions, none worse then Cieran, who playing his first match for the team, was kicked in the face giving him a nose bleed. Well done to all of you for a strong performance. Keep up the great work and see you all at training on Tuesday.
Many thanks to Richard for reffing and for the awesome group of supporters who turned out to watch the boys. Can we have the same when we meet them again in a few weeks time please. Many thanks

[General Smeeth and Brabourne FC Discussion] Under 10s it's tight at the top!

Dear All,
The Under 10's remain top of the league level on points but one goal less than Pilgrims who we played yesterday. It was the battle for top spot and what a game it was. The score was 1-1 but could have gone either way. Earlier in the season we beat Pilgrims 5-1 away but all the teams in the league have got stronger as the season has gone on and we knew it would be a tight game. We had a photographer from the KM Express taking pictures so we had to play well! Things got off well as we attacked Pilgrims and we had a few chances early on. It was hard work with Pilgrims playing 'the Christmas Tree' defence with 3 at the back and 3 up front which we struggled to cope with at times.

We scored first with a well taken goal at the far post after good work by Lewis GOWER and Adam COX crossing the ball across the face of the goal. Peter POVEY was at the far post to slide the ball into the net. We kept things tight and went into half time 1-0 ahead.

We knew it would be a tough second half and it was with Pilgrims coming forward looking for a goal. This left gaps in their defence and we got through a number of times but could not convert the chances into that crucial second goal.
The referee then awarded Pilgrims a penalty after a foul throw by a Pilgrims player but we must learn to play to the whistle. Joe tried his best to stop the shot but it was well hit and made the score 1-1. Give you guys credit you kept going and we had a number of chances to win the match but couldn't quite finish them. This makes for an interesting match next week against Mersham.

My thanks go to Maxwell BOURNE and Cameron ANDREWS who came along as part of the team but didn't get on to play. Boy's, as I explained, you have played a vital role in the squad and I thank you for that and your efforts as part of the team see us still at the top of the league.
See you all at training on Tuesday

Best wishes
Paul, Mark and Chris
